Shared decision making

Shared decision making provides information that empowers patients to make the best choice for them or their family.

What is shared decision making?

Shared decision making allows patients and providers to make health care decisions together. It takes into account what is important to the patient—and clinical evidence—so the patient can choose what is right for them.

Patient decision aids (PDAs) provide patients with information they need to make an informed decision. PDAs are tools providers can use as part of shared decision making with their patients. Through shared decision making, a patient has the information and support needed to make the best choice, based on their personal values and preferences.
