Upcoming changes to obstetric (OB) billing codes

Effective January 1, 2027, the American Medical Association (AMA) will replace the global obstetrics billing codes with itemized billing. This change will allow for more detailed billing for services provided during pregnancy and postpartum care that were previously bundled in global billing codes, such as mental health screening and care coordination.

The Health Care Authority (HCA) is working to update payment methodology and policies to support implementation of the new itemized billing by January 1, 2027. AMA will share detailed guidance and the replacement codes in fall of 2026.
