Substance use disorder (SUD) consent management guidance

Sharing patient information about SUD

It is important for physical and behavioral health providers working with individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) to be able to exchange information to support whole-person care. At the same time, individuals have a right to decide who may share and receive their SUD information.

Current laws and regulations regarding the sharing of SUD information can be difficult to understand and operationalize. HCA, in partnership with stakeholders around the state, has developed guidance for providers to help support this work.

Sharing Substance Use Disorder Information: A Guide for Washington State helps clarify the applicable federal regulations and law. It also includes additional provider and patient resources, such as a sample consent form.
