Abortion services

Abortion remains legal and covered by health care insurance in Washington State. That includes Apple Health (Medicaid). The Reproductive Privacy Act guaranteed this when passed in 1991, and the law was reaffirmed by the Washington Legislature in 2022.

Apple Health offers comprehensive health care services for 12 months after pregnancy ends. This includes pregnancies ending in abortion.

People who move to Washington with the intent to live here have access to Apple Health (Medicaid) with no waiting period, as long as they meet the income eligibility requirements. A person does not need to live in the state for a specific period of time prior to applying for or receiving Apple Health coverage.

Using state funds, Apple Health covers abortion as part of its reproductive health services. Pregnant individuals at or below 193 percent of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible for Apple Health.

What abortion services are covered?

Apple Health covers:

  • Medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill.
  • Surgical abortion, also called in-clinic abortion.

Clients enrolled in an Apple Health managed care organization (MCO) may self-refer outside their MCO network for abortion services. MCOs include:

  • Amerigroup
  • Community Health Plan of Washington
  • Coordinated Care of Washington
  • Molina Healthcare of Washington
  • UnitedHealthcare Community Plan
