Disability retirement

Must meet the PEBB Program eligibility and procedural requirements per WAC 182-12-171 or 182-12-211.

Note: Request a disability estimate from DRS if you participate with DRS or contact your appropriate higher-education authority regarding your disability retirement.

    Enroll in PEBB retiree insurance coverage

    If you are enrolling in PEBB retiree insurance coverage:

    1. Once you are approved by DRS, or the appropriate higher-education authority for disability retirement, request a Retiree Enrollment Guide.
    2. Contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B if you or any dependents you wish to cover are eligible for Medicare due to either age or disability.
    3. Send the PEBB Program your Retiree Election Form (form A) and any other applicable forms, including:
      1. Payment for your first month’s health plan premium and applicable premium surcharges (if not using pension deduction).
      2.  A copy of your Medicare ID card showing enrollment in Medicare Part A and Part B (if eligible). Write your full name and the last four digits of your Social Security number on the copy of your card. If you wish to enroll dependents who are enrolled in Medicare, include a copy of their Medicare ID card.
      3.  A copy of the formal determination letter from DRS, or the appropriate higher-education authority approving the disability retirement.

        The PEBB Program must receive the form and copy of the formal determination letter no later than 60 days after the date of the Washington State-sponsored retirement systems formal determination letter. Note: Make sure to note the date you wish to enroll in PEBB retiree insurance coverage on the form as described in WAC 182-12-211.

    Defer PEBB retiree insurance coverage

    If you are deferring PEBB retiree insurance coverage:

    • Once you are approved by DRS, or the appropriate higher-education authority for disability retirement, request a Retiree Enrollment Guide.
    • Send the PEBB Program your Retiree Election Form (form A) and a copy of the formal determination letter from DRS, or the appropriate higher-education authority approving the disability retirement. The PEBB Program must receive the form and copy of the formal determination letter no later than 60 days after the date of the Washington State-sponsored retirement systems formal determination letter. You must be enrolled in other qualified insurance to reenroll in the future. Note: Make sure to note the date you wish to defer PEBB retiree insurance coverage on the form as described in WAC 182-12-211.

    Submit Retiree Election Form

    Send your Retiree Election Form (form A) and any other required forms along with a copy of the formal determination letter from DRS, or the appropriate higher-education authority approving the disability retirement to the PEBB Program. The PEBB Program must receive the form no later than 60 days after the date of the Washington State-sponsored retirement systems formal determination letter. Note: Make sure to note the date you wish to defer PEBB retiree insurance coverage on the form as described in WAC 182-12-211.

    If you defer enrollment in PEBB retiree insurance coverage, you must be enrolled in other qualified insurance to reenroll in the future.
