Prescription drug cost transparency update

Monday, September 16, 2019

Background

The Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) is currently in the planning phase of the prescription drug cost transparency effort – a result of Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill 1224 in 2019. It is estimated that it will take up to 12 months to complete the rule making process.

What this means immediately

Drug manufacturers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) are not expected to submit data in 2019. There will not be imposed fines for not submitting in 2019. HCA anticipates being ready to collect data by October 2020.

Going forward

We will have information specific to each information supplier at a future date. To sign up for alerts related to drug price transparency, please visit HCA’s prescription drug cost transparency webpage.
