Creating well-being on campus: the role of Collegiate Recovery programs

Collegiate Recovery Programs are becoming more widespread nationwide, and each started in a slightly different way. As they have grown in popularity and demand, they are becoming more of a household name. Health Care Authority awarded a state grant to Renton Technical College to establish a program on their campus.

Renton Technical College (RTC) used their grant to establish the “Wellbriety Center” and was featured in Inside Higher Ed for their program. The center provides weekly support group meetings for students during the academic year, offers a variety of substance-free sober activities, naloxone kits and fentanyl testing strips, and has a growing recovery resource library. The grant also allowed the college to provide scholarships to students in recovery.

What is a Collegiate Recovery Program?

The goal of implementing collegiate recovery support programs is to offer the chance for students in recovery from substance use to experience the opportunities that higher education offers both in the college environment, and after by providing support, positive community connections, to prevent a return to substance use and promote successful academic performance.
