Good news for foster parents!

A change in this year's legislative session will help foster parents by raising the income limit for their eligibility. Now, licensed foster parents who are within Basic Health's (BH) normal income guidelines will continue to pay just $17.00 per month for their coverage and foster parents with somewhat higher incomes may also qualify for BH, as shown in the table below.

Our Foster Parent Program provides all of BH's benefits at an affordable cost to eligible foster parents. If you qualify for this program, your monthly premium may be as low as $17.00, but no more than $100.00 per licensed foster parent. If your
income is not more than 200% for the Federal Income Guidelines (FIG), you may be able to cover other family members.
If you have children under the age of 19, they may qualify for Basic Health Plus.

Basic Health Plus offers additional benefits for children. It is administered jointly by BH and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

Who qualifies for this program?
Washington State residents who:

  • Are not eligible for Medicare
  • Are not institutionalized at the time of enrollment
  • Are licensed foster parents
  • Have family gross monthly income of no more than 300% of the FIG.

What do I need to send?

  • A completed BH application marked "Foster Parent" on the front page
  • Proof of your family's gross income for the last 30 days or complete calendar month
  • Proof of your current street address in Washington State
  • A copy of your federal income tax return (IRS Form 1040) and all schedules for the most current tax year or proof of non-filing status
  • A copy of your current foster parent license

Once we receive these, we will process your application and notify you if you qualify for the Foster Parent Program.
