About the Grants
In August 2008, the Health Care Authority (HCA) awarded grants totaling $1.7 million to three communities to help them set up consumer-managed health record banks. Pilot projects in Spokane, Cashmere, and Bellingham are scheduled to begin in early 2009.
Each health record bank pilot project is a public-private partnership that will help test consumer-managed online health record bank accounts. Using this new technology, patients will have the ability to view and share their health information electronically.
The grant program is administered by the HCA in collaboration with the Health Information Infrastructure Advisory Board (HIIAB), a statewide board that advises HCA on strategy for adoption and use of electronic health information and electronic medical records in the state’s health care community. HCA will closely monitor the usage and benefits of the health record bank pilots.

Several strong applications did not get funded this year because grant funds are limited. The communities that submitted these applications have done a lot of work to develop a technical infrastructure, community support, and engage consumers in managing their own health. These communities are asked to continue to participate in the development of the health records bank concept and the community conversation about health record banks.
