Health Care Reform Overview
On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed into law a bill to bring unprecedented health care reform to Americans. An enormous amount of preparation for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) is already under way in Washington State. The Governor's Health Care Cabinet is coordinating these efforts in several key areas:
- The Governor's Health Policy Staff is taking the lead on workforce issues, looking ahead to make sure the health care system is prepared for the changes.
- The Health Care Authority is taking the lead on development of a health benefit "exchange", which creates a new health-benefit marketplace for employers and individuals that must be in place by 2014.
- The Medicaid Purchasing Administration is working on a federal bridge waiver that will help the state accommodate up to a half million new low-income Medicaid clients.
- The Office of the Insurance Commissioner is in charge of a new high-risk pool as well as insurance reforms going into effect now.
