What is an Accountable Care Organization?
An Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is an umbrella organization responsible for the cost and quality of care for patients in health homes. The ACO coordinates services of one or more health homes, specialty clinics (e.g. behavioral health/substance use) and acute care hospitals, and provides links to community resources such as housing, education, corrections and employment.
In accordance with Substitute Senate Bill 6522, the HCA will appoint and oversee a lead organization to conduct pilots of two organizational models for accountable care organizations (ACO). A lead organization will be selected and announced in March 2011.
